Pitch Perfect 2: A Review

Well hello there!
Good morning! 🙂

Sorry I missed you all yesterday! I wanted to get a lot of work out of the way for my online course.

You know when you eat something and someone asks how it is but you just kind of shrug? It’s not good, it’s not bad, it’s just “meh”. Or maybe you’re having a “meh” kind of day, where you want to get stuff done but you’re still so tired and drained from your lack of sleep last night?

Meh, just MEH.
Urban Dictionary defines it as, “Indifference; a verbal shrug”.

That’s how I felt about seeing the movie “Pitch Perfect 2” on Monday night. It wasn’t horrible, but it wasn’t great either.

It was……(say it with me)….MEH.

For those of you who haven’t seen the first Pitch Perfect, you MUST. It’s hilarious and overall, pretty well done. However, to me, sequels can either be really awesome or really bad. Not that I’m saying it was really bad… let’s just say it was entertaining enough.

SPOILER ALERTS comin’ your way!

This time around, the Barden Bellas have now become 3-time world champions who are about to fall apart and need to rise to the top again. Yeah, the plot is pretty Hollywood streamlined, but I think their “journey” to get to the final act is what makes these films so enjoyable to die-hard fans. (Which are probably more steered to teens and tweens). Anna Kendrick is more relaxed and comedic in this sequel, and I thought she and Rebel Wilson did well in carrying the movie to the end.

What I Liked:
The Return of the Bellas. The original cast returns and they all bring the same quirks, humor, and attitudes that made the first one great. Even “sergeant” Aubrey makes has a small role!

The Music. This might seem obvious, but the songs and mixes shine in this one as much as they did in the first one. The groups perform new things and the songs are fun to jam out to.

What I Didn’t Like:
Lack of Development in the Men Department. I know the movie is more centered around the Bellas but they did so little with some of the guys, especially Jesse, Becca’s boyfriend. Both Jesse and Benji were portrayed in a way that made it seem as though they hadn’t developed at all in the time between the two films. The only make character who gets any further development is Bumper, which was fine, but it was sad to see the other two disappear into the background.

The Comedy. Some of the jokes were funny and left you laughing, but most of the time it felt like the film was either falling back on old jokes that have become worn out, or trying too hard to make the new jokes funny. It never quite reached the magic that made the first movie such a huge success.

The Plot. I know comedy movies usually are a little less deep and insightful, but the plot of this one can be seen coming from about 20 minutes in. The big finale is almost entirely predictable and same with the storylines of the characters.

Overall:
Overall the movie, while having flaws that don’t allow it to climb as high as the first one, is enjoyable. It’s a fun movie and it stands up higher than many other comedy sequels do. However, it doesn’t go beyond and add to the original film, it simply plays like a slightly watered down cover song of something that was great but not the original.

Have an aca-mazing day everyone! 😉

Come on, I had to.
