No, not only bodybuilders should be eating lots of protein…..

Like training for a marathon, protein is not something to take lightly. Protein is essential for a wide range of bodily processes, especially the maintenance of muscles, hormones, bones, cartilage, hair and skin. Plus, protein helps dull hunger and those nasty midnight fridge raids.
Oh come on, we’ve all done it…..

Myth 1: All protein is created equally

Truth: The quality of a protein is determined by its ability to provide the 8 essential amino acids, which are necessary for the growth, maintenance, and repair of body tissues.
Animal sources: eggs, dairy, meat, poultry, and fish.
As well as a vegetable protein, soy is considered high-quality because it contains all of the essential amino acids in the necessary proportions.

Myth 2: Animal protein causes cancer

Truth: There is no research to support the notion that animal protein causes cancer. However, I’ve read about evidence that red meat increases the risk of cancers of the colon and rectum. And, increased intake of processed meat is associated with an increased risk of stomach cancer. Like any processed food, it’s all about balance!

Myth 3: Protein needs are the same throughout your life

Truth: As we age, we gradually lose muscle mass, a process called sarcopenia. However, resistance exercise and a healthy diet, which includes slightly more protein, can help minimize the loss of both muscle mass and strength. How cool is that?  As we age, our protein needs increase because older people require higher doses of protein to stimulate that muscle protein synthesis.

Myth 4: A high protein diet is the key to gaining muscle mass and size

Truth: Though protein is necessary for gaining muscle mass, size, and strength, this isn’t necessarily true. Higher protein meals trigger the release of hormones to your brain, telling it that your stomach is full. Therefore, a healthy balance of protein, carbohydrates, and fat is necessary for building muscle and gaining weight.
